Poet Daniel Massa, actor Narcy Calamatta and painter Doris Micallef were awarded Ġieħ ir-Repubblika on Republic Day.

Professor Massa and Calamatta were awarded the National Order of Merit while Ms Micalled was honoured with the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika.

Professor Massa is a distinguished Maltese poet and a scholar of Maltese and English literature.

Following his studies in Malta and the U.K., Daniel Massa started his literary voyage in by promoting the Maltese literature within the Moviment tal-Malti and then the Moviment Qawmien Letterarju.

His poetry, best known for post-colonial and socio-political commentary issues, included the well-known works, such as “Xibkatuliss” () and “Barefoot in the Saltpans” ().

He was the first Maltese head of the English department at the University of Malta and also served as the dean of the Arts Faculty and established the Centre for Communications Technology.
