Austrian-born writer, playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and screenwriter, Peter Handke, was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature "for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience." Mr.
Handke is the second Austrian Nobel Laureate in Literature, after Elfriede Jelinek who was awarded the prize in 2004. Considered a stylistic innovator and a chronicler of psychological alienation, he rose to prominence as a major figure in postmodern German literature during the 1970s and 1980s.
