Although Govind Sadashiv Ghurye is regarded as father of systematic teaching of Sociology in India, Indian anthropology is also indebted to him.

He took his professional training in the University of Cambridge under the supervision of W.H.R. Rivers, and A.C. Haddon.

Coming from Cambridge in 1924 he became the first Reader and the first head of the Department of Sociology in Bombay.

He served there for thirty-five years and disseminated his valuable thoughts in reputed journals of India and abroad. He enriched both Indian anthropology and sociology.

The first publication of Ghurye ‘Caste and Race in India’ appeared in 1932 under the ‘History and Civilization Series’ edited by C.K.

Ogden. It became a basic book for the students of Indian sociology and anthropology. In this book he delineated a comprehensive picture of the institution of caste discussing its origin, features, functions, development, etc.
